The famous designer Jean Paul Gaultier entered the world of fashion without any formal training. He pestered renowned designers with his own sketches until fashion designer Pierre Cardin hired him as an assistant.

Jean Paul Gaultier changed mentors several times, and in 1976, he presented his first collection. He was soon dubbed the ‘enfant terrible’ (terrible child) of the French fashion scene.

Gaultier was by no means highly regarded at the time, but he was original. He calmly drew inspiration from the French streets and sent tattooed models or plus-size women down the catwalk. He treated his perfumes in the same way.
