Famed designer Jean Paul Gaultier entered the fashion world without any formal training. He pestered renowned designers with his own sketches until fashion designer Pierre Cardin hired him as an assistant.

Jean Paul Gaultier changed mentors several times, and in 1976, he presented his first collection. He was quickly dubbed the "enfant terrible" (terrible child) of the French fashion scene.

Gaultier wasn't exactly highly regarded at the time, but he was certainly original. He quietly drew inspiration from the French streets and sent tattooed models and overweight women down the catwalk. He treated his fragrances the same way.
